This Product Safety and Suitability Notice explains important points to check before buying, assembling or using a TrueNewel product.

TrueNewel products are practical DIY cutting guides. They are designed to help with a specific part of a stair refurbishment project, but they do not remove the need for careful measuring, safe tool use, suitable materials, and good judgement.

Please read this notice carefully before ordering or using a TrueNewel product.

If you are unsure about any part of the job, please seek advice from a qualified joiner, carpenter, stair fitter or other competent tradesperson before cutting.

3. Products covered by this notice

This notice applies to TrueNewel products sold through:

truenewel.com

It also applies to any other TrueNewel website, product page, sales page or checkout operated by Syxth Limited trading as TrueNewel, unless different safety or suitability information is clearly shown.

This notice covers current and future TrueNewel products, including:

• TrueNewel saw guides;
• model-specific newel post cutting guides;
• flat-pack kits;
• ready-assembled kits;
• saw kits;
• accessories;
• future sizes or versions we may introduce.

4. Size-specific products

TrueNewel saw guides are size-specific products.

Each guide is designed for the specific newel post size stated on the relevant product page.

For example, TrueNewel 90 is designed for 90mm square stair newel posts.

Future versions may be designed for other square post sizes if there is enough demand.

You must check the size, shape and condition of your existing newel post before ordering and again before cutting.

Do not assume that one TrueNewel model will fit all newel posts.

5. What TrueNewel is designed to do

A TrueNewel saw guide is designed to help guide a suitable hand saw when cutting an existing square stair newel post.

It is intended to help with the cut after you have:

• checked that the guide fits your post;
• followed your stair refurbishment kit instructions;
• identified the correct cut height;
• marked the post accurately;
• positioned the guide correctly;
• fixed the guide securely;
• chosen a suitable saw;
• made sure it is safe to proceed.

TrueNewel helps guide the saw. It does not do the whole job for you.

6. What TrueNewel is not

TrueNewel products are not:

• drilling jigs;
• dowel-hole guides;
• spigot-hole guides;
• structural assessment tools;
• professional installation services;
• a guarantee of a perfect cut;
• a guarantee that your stair refurbishment kit will fit;
• a replacement for your stair refurbishment kit instructions;
• a replacement for professional advice;
• suitable for every staircase, post, saw or user.

Unless a product page clearly says otherwise, TrueNewel products are cut-only saw guides.

They do not decide where your newel post should be cut.

7. Check your post before ordering

Before ordering, please check your existing newel post carefully.

You should check:

• the width of the post;
• the depth of the post;
• whether the post is square;
• whether the post is badly twisted;
• whether the post is heavily out of square;
• whether the corners are heavily rounded;
• whether the post is damaged, rotten, split or altered;
• whether you have enough access to fit the guide;
• whether you have enough access to use a hand saw safely;
• whether your stair refurbishment kit actually requires this type of cut.

A small tolerance, paint thickness, or lightly rounded corner may be acceptable for some products, depending on the model and product page wording.

A badly twisted, heavily rounded, heavily out-of-square, damaged or unusual post may not be suitable.

8. Not suitable for all posts

Unless the relevant product page clearly says otherwise, TrueNewel products are not intended for:

• half-newel posts fixed against a wall;
• round posts;
• turned posts;
• metal posts;
• heavily shaped posts;
• badly twisted posts;
• heavily out-of-square posts;
• posts with very limited access;
• posts where there is not enough space to use a hand saw safely;
• posts where the guide cannot sit flat and secure;
• posts that are damaged, unstable, rotten or structurally questionable.

If your post is unusual, please ask a competent tradesperson before ordering or using the product.

9. Follow your stair refurbishment kit instructions

TrueNewel does not tell you where your old newel post should be cut.

Your stair refurbishment kit instructions should tell you the correct cut height and fitting method for your replacement parts.

Always follow the instructions supplied with your stair refurbishment kit.

If there is any conflict between general information on our website and the specific instructions supplied with your stair refurbishment kit, seek professional advice before cutting.

Do not guess the cut height.

10. Measure carefully before cutting

Cutting an existing stair newel post is an irreversible job.

Once the post has been cut, it cannot simply be restored to its original state.

Before cutting, you should:

• measure carefully;
• mark the correct cut line;
• mark any lower guide line required for your TrueNewel model;
• check the marks from more than one side;
• check that the guide is fitted the correct way up;
• check that the guide is positioned correctly;
• check that the guide is fixed securely;
• check that the saw will run correctly in the guide;
• check that the cut is safe and suitable;
• stop and seek advice if anything looks wrong.

Measure twice, cut once.

11. Model-specific guide lines

Some TrueNewel models may require a second guide line to position the product correctly.

For example, TrueNewel 90 may use a lower guide line to position the bottom edge of the guide below the final cut line.

Always follow the instructions for the specific model you have bought.

Do not assume that the same measurements, offsets or fitting steps apply to every future TrueNewel size or version.

12. Fixing the guide to the post

TrueNewel saw guides are designed to be fixed securely to the existing post before cutting.

The current product may use screws through side fixing holes.

You are responsible for:

• positioning the guide correctly;
• making sure the guide is square and level where required;
• securing it firmly;
• making sure it does not move during cutting;
• using suitable fixing points;
• checking that fixing the guide will not cause an issue for your project.

Screws may leave holes or marks in the part of the old post being cut away or altered.

Do not use the guide if it cannot be fixed securely.

13. Flat-pack kit assembly

If you buy a flat-pack kit, you must assemble it correctly before use.

Please follow the assembly instructions supplied with the product.

Where glue is supplied or required, allow it to cure fully before using the guide.

Do not use a flat-pack guide while the glue is wet, weak, partly cured or uncertain.

Incorrect assembly may affect accuracy, safety and product performance.

Do not use a flat-pack kit if it has been assembled incorrectly, damaged, distorted or weakened.

14. Saw suitability

Use a suitable hand saw for the TrueNewel model you are using.

The correct saw type may depend on the model, guide slot, acrylic guide faces, post size and product instructions.

The product page or instructions may give guidance on suitable saw blade thickness or kerf size.

For example, TrueNewel 90 is currently described as suitable for a hand saw with a blade around 1mm thick and a kerf of around 1.5mm.

Do not assume those measurements apply to every future TrueNewel model.

If your saw is too thick, too thin, too flexible, too aggressive, damaged, blunt or unsuitable, the guide may not work properly.

15. Hand saw use only unless stated otherwise

Unless the product page clearly says otherwise, TrueNewel saw guides are designed for use with a suitable hand saw.

Do not use power saws, reciprocating saws, circular saws, jigsaws, oscillating tools or other powered cutting tools with TrueNewel products unless the specific product page and instructions clearly say they are suitable.

Using an unsuitable tool may damage the guide, damage the staircase, create a poor cut or cause injury.

16. Sharp tools and personal safety

Saws and cutting tools are sharp and can cause injury.

When using a TrueNewel product, you should take sensible safety precautions.

This may include:

• keeping children and pets away from the work area;
• using eye protection;
• using a dust mask where appropriate;
• keeping hands away from the blade path;
• using a steady stance;
• working in good light;
• keeping the area clear;
• not rushing;
• not cutting while tired, distracted or unsure;
• stopping immediately if the guide moves or the saw binds.

You are responsible for using tools safely.

17. Staircase safety and structure

Staircases are important structural and safety features in a home.

Newel posts, handrails, baserails, spindles and related parts may affect the safety of the staircase and balustrade.

Do not cut, remove or alter stair parts unless you are confident it is safe and appropriate to do so.

If you are unsure whether a post can be cut, whether a stair part is structural, or whether your refurbishment kit is suitable, seek advice from a qualified joiner, carpenter, stair fitter or other competent professional.

18. No guarantee of a perfect result

TrueNewel products are designed to help guide the saw, but they do not guarantee a perfect cut.

The final result depends on many factors, including:

• post condition;
• post size;
• post shape;
• accuracy of measuring;
• accuracy of marking;
• correct guide positioning;
• secure fixing;
• saw choice;
• saw sharpness;
• user technique;
• access around the post;
• whether instructions are followed properly.

We are not responsible for poor results caused by incorrect measuring, incorrect marking, unsuitable posts, poor fixing, unsuitable saws, unsafe use, user error or failure to follow instructions.

19. Sacrificial and disposable guide

TrueNewel saw guides are practical, sacrificial cutting guides.

The saw runs through or against parts of the guide during normal use.

This means saw marks, guide-face wear, MDF wear, acrylic wear, screw-hole wear, dust, small chips or other signs of use are expected.

Unless a product page clearly says otherwise, TrueNewel guides are intended as disposable one-project guides rather than permanent workshop tools.

Normal wear during use is not normally considered a fault.

20. Materials and small variations

TrueNewel products may be made from materials such as MDF, acrylic, screws, glue, packaging and other components.

Small variations in colour, surface finish, laser-cut edges, acrylic appearance, MDF tone, packaging or component appearance may occur.

These small variations are not normally faults if the product works as intended.

21. Do not use damaged products

Do not use a TrueNewel product if it appears damaged, incomplete, distorted, incorrectly assembled, weakened or unsafe.

If your product arrives damaged or appears to be faulty before use, please contact us before using it.

22. Stop if something does not look right

Stop before cutting if:

• the guide does not fit properly;
• the guide rocks or moves;
• the post appears unsuitable;
• the cut line looks wrong;
• the saw does not run correctly;
• there is not enough space to cut safely;
• you are unsure about the refurbishment kit instructions;
• you are not confident about the job.

It is better to stop and ask for advice than to make an irreversible cut in the wrong place.

23. Trade and professional use

TrueNewel products may be used by DIY customers, tradespeople, stair kit suppliers, installers or other business customers.

Trade or professional users are responsible for checking product suitability for their own work, customers, tools, methods and risk assessments.

Use by a tradesperson does not change the fact that the product is a size-specific, sacrificial saw guide unless separate written terms say otherwise.

24. Children and vulnerable users

TrueNewel products are not toys.

They may include small parts, screws, glue, sharp tools, packaging or other items that are unsuitable for children.

Keep TrueNewel products, saws, screws, glue and packaging away from children and pets.

25. Customer responsibility summary

Before buying or using a TrueNewel product, you are responsible for checking:

• the correct guide size;
• your post size;
• your post shape;
• your post condition;
• your stair refurbishment kit instructions;
• the correct cut height;
• that you have enough working space;
• that you have a suitable saw;
• that the guide is assembled correctly, if flat-pack;
• that the guide is positioned and fixed correctly;
• that you can use the product safely.
