Most stair refurbishment kits make the new parts look simple to fit. But before the new post can go on, the old newel often has to be cut down to form a clean, level stump.

Marking a square line around the post is only the first part. The real challenge is keeping a hand saw square in two directions at once as you cut through the vertical newel post — something that is extremely difficult to do accurately without a guide.

How do I cut a newel post square?

To cut an old newel post squarely, first follow your stair refurbishment kit instructions to mark the correct cut height. Then mark a second square line exactly 50mm below the cut line to position the bottom edge of the TrueNewel 90 jig. Once screwed to the 90mm square post, the jig helps guide the hand saw through the cut.

A Square Saw Guide for the Cut That Matters

TrueNewel 90 screws directly to your existing 90mm newel post. Once fixed in place, the acrylic guide faces help keep your saw running square as you cut through the post.

It does not decide where you cut. Your stair refurbishment instructions do that. TrueNewel simply helps guide the saw once you have measured and positioned it correctly.

Mark your cut height

Follow the instructions supplied with your stair refurbishment kit and carefully mark the correct cut line around the post. Then mark a second square line exactly 50mm below the cut line — this lower line shows where the bottom edge of the TrueNewel 90 jig should sit.

Fit the guide

Position TrueNewel 90 around the post, lining up the bottom edge of the jig with the lower 50mm guide line. Screw it securely in place using the side fixing holes.

Cut carefully

Run a suitable hand saw through the acrylic guide faces beside the blade path, keeping steady pressure and letting the guide help control the cut.

Remove and continue your refurb

Remove the jig and continue fitting your replacement newel post according to your stair kit instructions.

Important note: Measure twice, cut once. Check both your cut line and the 50mm lower guide line carefully before fitting the jig and cutting. Once the post is cut, it cannot be restored.

TrueNewel 90 uses a laser-cut MDF body with harder-wearing 2mm acrylic guide faces positioned where the saw blade runs. The acrylic faces are designed to help the guide last through the main cuts on a typical staircase refurbishment, while still keeping it affordable as a disposable one-project tool.
